It’s autumn already! Here's all of the latest from the Red Lion, Earlston
Time to take stock, relax and enjoy a slower pace of life.
As the leaves start to turn roaring red, here’s all of the inspiration you need need to kick-start your October the right way.
Live like a Norwegian!
Okay, so we might be a good 1,481 miles away from Norway (and that’s as the crow flies) but the experts have done the science and apparently ‘thinking like a Norwegian’ is the perfect way to boost the spirit as the mercury starts to drop and the days start getting shorter.
It all comes from the Norwegian belief in ‘Koselig’ - embracing the cold and the dark; surrounding ourselves with nature and enjoying cosy get-togethers with family and friends. It’s even been celebrated as one of the main reasons why Scandinavian countries, despite their long, cold winters… are among the happiest in the world! Say no more, we’ll have some of that.
So, because we could all use a little bit more joy, we got to thinking ‘what would a Koselig themed break here in Earlston look like?’.
Getting back to nature
It’ll come as no surprise to anyone who’s visited us before, we love a good walk or cycle! In the times of old when we had a warm hearth ready for weary walkers in the bar, the room would always be full of the cheerful nattering of people who’d spent the day rambling and exploring.
While the bar may still be temporarily closed, we’re still blessed with a bounty of beautiful routes to explore here in Earlston. Our favourite Autumn path is the ‘Earlston Diamond Jubilee Route’, a countryside ramble that spans from Earlston to Leaderfoot.
At a respectable 5.2 km, it’s the perfect distance for beginners and intermediates alike, better yet… walking, cycling, running are all perfectly suited to the route. Many of the sections are fully accessible too, but we’d recommend avoiding any of the more strenuous parts of the route with wheelchairs/ pushchairs etc.
Our suggestion – make the best of the cooler days by wrapping up warm, grabbing that travel cup and making the perfect use of the complimentary hot beverages on offer here at The Red Lion. A hot drink, warm woollens and a recce enjoying picturesque scenery are the perfect recipe for lifting the spirit!
Café catch-ups and cosy village life
If you prefer to spend your days of R&R in a slightly more ‘populous’ location, that’s fine too. The nearby town of Melrose is perfectly poised to offer a little slice of village-style life, with friendly locals to chat to; and plenty of beautifully (socially distanced) cafes, bars, restaurants to enjoy.
Here’s what one of our latest visitors had to say on their recent stay at The Red Lion:
“Decent hotel-type room, with big queen bed and lovely shower. Very convenient for Abbotsford, Scott’s View, the Eildons, Melrose (great town: pubs, book shop, walks, art galleries)”
Well, there you have it, Melrose is not to be missed! We’d recommend a jaunt around the picturesque abbey (a whopping 884 year old beauty) and checking out the local craft and artisan shops. Also, a trip to Melrose is never complete without a stop-off at ‘Apples for Jam’; the cutest café with a daily bounty of fluffy scones, light bites and artisan coffee sourced from local roastery ‘Three-Hills’.
Remember, we’ve always got some great ideas of nearby destinations and attractions on the explore page of our website too, so you’ll never be stuck for things to do and see.
A change is as good as a break
While some days are perfect for walking or exploring new towns… sometimes ‘a change is as good as a break’. Simply having a sumptuous room or apartment to recline in and read a good book in peace and quiet can be the perfect antidote to modern life!
We could tell you about how great it is to stay at The Red Lion all day… until we’re red in the face, but here’s what some of our latest guests have had to say about their experience.
“Easy check-in procedure, clean room, great location, comfortable bed. Would have no hesitation staying here again”.
