Holy Cow, that's a local brew!
When sipping a pint of Holy Cow or Foxy Blonde, have you ever wondered what’s gone into making the brew, how far it's travelled? We thought we’d delve into the background story of our treasured local suppliers, Born in the Borders.
John Henderson, whose farm sits on the banks of the River Teviot was farming malting barley, when he came up with the inspiration for having his own microbrewery on site at Lanton Mill near Jedburgh.
Formerly named the Scottish Borders Brewery, the Born in the Borders Brewery is now a multi-award-winning microbrewery and Scotland's only 'plough to pint' brewery. But, true to their low ‘food miles’ ethos, they still only deliver in re-useable cask to pubs and bars within a 75-mile radius. Here at The Red Lion, we’re fortunate enough to be well within that catchment area.
Range of beers
In 2011, the microbrewery opened using a 10-barrel brewing plant which was installed by Johnson Brewing Design. In addition to its regular beers, Foxy Blonde, Game Bird, Holy Cow, Dark Horse, Flower of Scotland and Gold Dust, the brewery also uses locally foraged ingredients to flavour a separate range of beers.
Visit the brewery
If you fancy seeing the brewing process in action, you can. Visitors are welcome at Born in the Borders, which is also home to a restaurant, shop, and the Lilliard Gin distillery.
There’s also grass-sledging available for the kids and, if you visit between May and September, you might be fortunate enough to see the local osprey which return each year to nest nearby.
